Not what we expected - a Lesson in Adjustments

Today’s post is shared by Amy Block. Amy serves with her husband Todd at Village of Hope.

Village of Hope is located in San Lucas, Guatemala. The vision for Village of Hope was born out the knowledge that God has a heart for the hurting. Scripture reveals a God who is passionate about the sick, the widow, the orphan, the alien, and the poor. The purpose of Village of Hope is to provide faith, family and a future to adolescent mothers, children who were sex trafficked and children effected by HIV in a family style setting.

We have been trying to be very intentional during this season to grow even closer and really listen to the lessons being taught.

Today we set up our table with art supplies and played music chair painting. We turned on worship music and a timer. Each person had 2 minutes to add to the painting and then pass it on. Some of us recognized our control issues more than others.

Afterwards each of us had to share what we learned from this experience. I heard things like “Not everything turns out the way we intended it to” to “When you start something you need to make sure others can build on it when your time is over” to “working with limited resources in a limited amount of time can be very difficult.” All lessons in life that are worth learning.

I am not going to lie- I am not amazing at dealing with the unknowns right now. In all honesty I probably never have been. I’d like to pretend my faith is solid- but the truth is I have to keep reminding myself, minute by minute, who holds the future in His hands and go back to that. Even when things don’t turn out the way I thought they would.

“For my thoughts are not your thoughts, neither are your ways my ways, declares the Lord. For as the heavens are higher than the earth, so are my ways higher than your ways and my thoughts than your thoughts.” Isaiah 55:8-9
